Psychoanalysis And It's Role In Eclectic Therapy
Basic Principles of Psychoanalysis
1) Psychic Determinism
This principle states that every behaviour which is external or internal is either caused or determined by prior mental events. The external world and mental events combine to determine all aspects of our behaviour.
2) Unconscious - Conscious dimension
Sigmund Freud's model of psychoanalysis contains that mental events influence our behaviour where we possibly may or may not be aware of these mental events consciously.
This awareness of mental events can be:
Unconscious - these are mental events that are very difficult to recall and needs intervention to become aware of.
Preconscious - these are events that aren't a part of current awareness but can easily become aware of.
Conscious - this includes currently what is a part of conscious awareness
Psychoanalysis Techniques That Help in Eclectic Therapy
1) Free Association
This technique works on the principle that our mind associates ideas and concepts together and if we allow our thoughts to flow with the help of these associations, we would be able to get access to information stored in the unconscious mind of an individual.
2) Freudian Slip
This technique is also known as the slip of tongue method in which an individual's unconscious mind trying to convey a meaningful message that we are otherwise not consciously aware of.
3) Transference
Here in the process, the client projects the feelings that they have for someone else onto the therapist which gives an insight into how the client views the therapist, what is the equation forming in the client's mind about the therapist looks like and what are the unconscious conflicts taking place in his mind.
4) Catharsis
In this technique, suppressed emotions bothering an individual is observed. The client may not be even aware of these emotions but is vented out with them.
5) Dream Analysis
Dream analysis is the most popular method in psychotherapy. Here the dreams that are naturally created by the unconscious mind are examined. This dream is tried to be given a meaning by translating the unconscious dream or thoughts mostly by metaphors which further need to be interpreted to come to an outcome.
6) Resistance
Here in the process is considered as a sign to help the client dig deeper and access the unconscious part. Where resistance towards the process is a sign that the unconscious is creating barriers to protect them and prevent anxiety, so that is we need to work upon after understanding the circumstances.
